chickens

March brought a new flock of chickens to our yard. This time with a few changes. Along with a mixture of different hen breeds we got a few broiler chickens to raise for eating. We were amazed at the difference in this breed (Cornish Cross). Below are two Cornish crosses with a Rhode Island Red. All are the same age but the crosses are huge in comparison. They are no longer with us but tasted wonderful (we have two left in the freezer).

We also added in these two strange looking birds. They started off looking just like the hens but soon enough you could tell there was something different about these two. We decided they looked a lot like ostriches... until they grew up and became some fine looking turkeys. They are really fun and have the added benefit of being large enough that the dogs leave them alone. Bree ignores all the birds now but Jayden is a natural setter and goes into hunting mode. He is useful for rounding up the chickens as he doesn't really chase them but finds them and freezes. Too bad none of us are bird hunters, I think Jayden would be great.

Sunday one of the hens stared laying, so far two are laying so by August Brandon and Travis should be back in the egg business. They are very excited as it has been far too long with no steady income. I am also excited as they are so much better than store bought eggs.
